The question

The question

July 31, 2021
The brown-haired girl was bothered by
the biggest question in the world.
She had examined it from every angle.
Turned it inside out.
Each time it shifted and changed itself,
like the wind.

(Pause.)

‘What’s the difference between right and wrong?’
She put the question to the dishevelled little owl.
She paused. A split second. A breath.
She said, ‘What’s "right," anyway? What’s "wrong?"
‘They look so alike—
‘I can’t tell them apart!’

(Pause.)

Her thoughts tumbled together.
Words spilled from her, like rain.
She said, ‘What’s wrong today, might be right tomorrow,
‘What’s right today, might be wrong next week.
‘What’s right for me, might be wrong for you.’
She looked to the water. And sighed.
